Railway Health Service

The Railway Health Services (RHS) Department was established primarily to protect the health of the staff of Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and their dependants; and for safety of the staff and passengers using Railway services.

The RHS is made up of a Headquarters at Ebute Metta, seven Industrial Clinics/Hospitals at Railway District Headquarters and Satellite Clinics at large Depot Stations.

The 110 bed state of the art Railway Medical Centre Ebute Metta was commissioned in 1964 as a Railway Central/Referral Hospital. It was established to offer high quality health care services to NRC staff and members of their families. During the civil war, the in-patient services of the hospital were handed over to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital as an annex. In 1986, it was converted to Central Hospital for parastatals under the Federal Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation. This arrangement was abandoned in 1994. The hospital was then commercialized and was opened to members of the public. In 2004, it was taken over by Federal Ministry of Health as the Federal Medical Centre in Lagos State.

At the district level, the Hospitals/Clinics operate as primary care institutions. They have out-patient and in-patient health care services. Pharmacy, X-ray and laboratory services are offered at all Hospitals/Clinics at District Headquarters. There is also a Dental Unit at Zaria. RHS offer primary health care services to railway staff and their dependants via the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). There is also a fee-for-service scheme for the public.

Other responsibilities of RHS Department include:

  • Environmental protection and aesthetics of the railway compounds. This is done by the health unit of the department by environmental sanitation, pest control, horticulture and management of solid and liquid wastes.

  • Administration of first aid and training of first aiders through the St. Johns Ambulance Brigade. Nigerian Railway Corporation is a District of the St. John's Ambulance Brigade. Members of the brigade also assist in industrial accidents and in disaster situations. They also help in managing epidemic outbreaks.

  • Industrial Hygiene and safety. These activities areas are hampered by the lack of company safety policy and goals which are being promoted and enforced. It is hoped that safety and industrial hygiene would be at the top of the corporations operation.
